Eric DeBoer- Ottawa County Sheriff
“I was born in the suburbs of Chicago and moved to MI after attending Calvin College. I began working for the Sheriff’s Office while at Calvin and have been there ever since. I am married to Hillary and we have a son and daughter. We have lived in Holland and attend Harderwyk CRC.”
Josh Brugger – D10 Commissioner
“I am a third generation resident of Grand Haven. Together, with my beautiful wife, Jen, we are raising the fourth generation of West Michigan Brugger’s. Jen recently completed her MSW at GVSU and is a full time Social Worker in the Reeths-Puffer School District working with elementary aged students. Kaiden is a Senior and Caleb is a Freshman, both at the Grand Haven High School.
We’re neither fully left nor fully right and we’re teaching our boys that to be fully one or the other makes for a limited world view. When we isolate ourselves by listening to news and media outlets that only align with our opinions, we grow further apart as a nation.
Confirmation bias is real and it divides is. This needs to change and our family is working to make that change. We invite you to join us.”
Danielle Smith – D1 Commissioner
I am a native Michigander with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Michigan State University. I’ve always intended to get involved at the local level and have reached a point where I feel I can apply my life and professional work experiences to improving our community. I have deep experience in collaborating with others across multiple points of view to reach consensus; I’ve
also managed multi-million-dollar global budgets successfully.

Doug Zylstra – D3 Commissioner
“These past five years, I have worked to be a consistent, positive voice on the County board to best represent City of Holland residents.
I am running for re-election to continue this work and advocate for the following principles in a way that actively includes all residents:
- Housing – Expanding Housing opportunities here in Holland and throughout Ottawa County.
- Health Care – Ensuring that the County continues investing in the physical and mental health of Ottawa and Holland residents
- Cost of Government – Ensuring that we’re spending your tax dollars responsibly, and then communicating that openly and transparently.”
Chris Crothers – D4 Commissioner
Chris is running for Ottawa County Commissioner in District 4. His step into the political realm is largely inspired by his grandfather, who played a pivotal role in shaping his worldview and instilled in him the value of civil discourse. When he was younger, Chris would drive his grandfather to Socrates Café, where he would observe a group of his elders civilly discuss a different topic each month. These monthly gatherings taught Chris invaluable lessons: always be open to changing your opinion, support your views with facts, and strive to understand others’ perspectives.
Born in Holland and raised in Zeeland, Chris grew up very involved at church. After attending GVSU for engineering, he had a dream of opening a space where the community could gather. In 2019 he helped start Tulip City Brewstillery. Now, he is the head brewer and a member of leadership at Tulip City Brewstillery and Hopland Brewstillery. Chris was integral to these growing into those dreamed of community spaces. Through his affiliation with the breweries, Chris has worked with numerous local nonprofits. These collaborations and relationships propelled his passion for community and inclusivity. Chris will bring much needed perspective to this board. He represents the working class while also having some experience at the leadership level. Chris brings a generational perspective with the prosperity of the 90’s and the unique economic challenges facing young people today. Chris is a problem solver, collaborator, and hard worker. He will ensure progress is pursued.

My extended family includes my sister who lives and works in Philadelphia with her husband and my partners who also live in Jenison.”

Tim Meyer
Tim and his wife, Patty Sutherland, who live in Grand Haven Township, share a blended family of three sons, one daughter, two grandchildren, and a love of politics. He went on to work on several campaigns, most notably knocking on doors for Barack Obama in three states and leading the Grand Haven Obama ‘08 canvass operation. Tim ran for State Representative in 2016.
Tim worked in food service from high school through college and became food service director at Aquinas College. He opened his business, Rock “n” Road Cycle, in Grand Haven in 1985 and opened additional locations in Muskegon, South Haven and Holland. Tim sold his business to his son, Matt, but remains involved to assist his son in the transition.
A strong belief in community involvement, Tim has been a member of and very involved with church leadership boards and programs, county boards and commissions, served two terms on City of Grand Haven Central Business District Development Authority, and was Vice Chair of the Ottawa county Democratic party.
Abby Klomparens – D86
Abby’s love for our community is the driving force behind her run for office. She will be a champion for policies that move our community forward—not backward—as a fresh voice in Lansing.
Abby was born and raised in Holland, attending Holland Public Schools for K-12 before going on to receive her degree from Grand Valley State University. Having returned to Holland, Abby has immersed herself in advocacy and public service
Marcia Mansaray – D85
Marcia was born and raised where eastern Ottawa County meets Kent County. That’s where her mother’s grandparents — Louis and Nellie Zondervan — chose to settle after immigrating from the Netherlands. She started delivering the Grand Rapids Press seven days a week when I was 13. She worked summer jobs in food service and in manufacturing at Steelcase during high school and college.
She earned a four-year, full-ride scholarship to Grand Valley State University and graduated with a teaching certificate and a degree in science. She worked part-time for more than a decade as an adjunct professor in GVSU’s science lab while home-schooling three children. Finally, she has spent the last two decades in public health — as a health educator, an epidemiologist, and ultimately as the deputy health officer for the Ottawa County Department of Public Health. Marcia was raised Republican and voted Republican most of her life. But national and state politics — and her front-row seat to the attempted destruction of our county’s public health services under Ottawa Impact — has changed that. She’s running as a Democrat for the 85th Michigan House because the Republican party has moved away from her long-held beliefs about the kinds of communities we want to build. Marcia is happy to be welcomed into a party that shares her values.
Marcia has demonstrated that she will bring a courageous voice to Lansing.
Lois Maassen – D89

Philip Kuyers – D9 Commissioner
“As a lifelong resident of Ottawa County, it’s been my honor to serve this community in several different roles. I helped Ottawa County become the fastest-growing community in Michigan, with some of the lowest tax rates best credit ratings in the state.
As County Commissioner, I will bring a strong work ethic and pro-life family values to my role. I have over four decades of experience owning and operating two businesses in Ottawa County, and my wife Pam and I have been married for 40 years with four children and eight grandchildren.
Jordan Jorritsma – D2 Commissioner
“I’m Jordan Jorritsma. I’ve lived on the North side of Holland my entire life. I went to high school at Holland Christian and went on to graduate with a degree in Economics at Calvin College. I promptly moved back to Holland with my wife, Liz, where we live with our dog Ike, and a baby on the way.
I’ve worked to improve Ottawa county through my job as a legislative director in the Michigan House of Representatives. And I’ve been blessed to work on some important legislation such as bills that would improve healthcare, support public safety, reform our foster care system, protect life, and lower taxes. I also serve on the Ottawa County Land Bank Authority and I’m a member of Harderwyk Ministries.”
